Jordan Pond Acadia National Park Jordan Pond House

jordan pond house

I NEED you to order at least one probably 3 servings of the Jordan Pond House Popovers! I would think about flying to Maine just to savor a few more of these popovers they are that good. Acadia lays claim to the title of the first Eastern National Park. It became Lafayette National Park in 1919 and then, with the addition of the Schoodic Peninsula, Acadia National Park in 1929. George Dorr, a Bostonian, first visited Mount Desert Island with his parents at age 13.

Jordan Pond House Restaurant

In 1946, Rockefeller began a company to run the Jordan Pond House restaurant and ensure that the tradition of luncheon, tea and popovers would continue. Since 1893, guests to the park have been enjoying delicious tea and fantastically fluffy popovers on the picturesque Jordan Pond House Lawn. Pioneered by Nellie McIntire, the first proprietor of the restaurant, this tradition is certainly one that you don’t want to miss out on.

Jordan Pond in Acadia

Some of the bridges are the most visited and photographed sites in Acadia. Upon completion of the current building in 1982, tea on the lawn has been an uninterrupted summer tradition. “I was so ready,” she admits, “and I was so, so, so in love with the Trout Farm. I still love it madly.” Thanks to the careful ministrations and lively personalities of Karen and Jon, the Trout Farm lives on, full of love, warmth and merriment. With imagination and skill, they have redeemed a worthy property and preserved a beloved piece of Valley history.

Gift Shop & Deck

Auto access to the restaurant is provided via the Park Loop Road. Jordan Pond House, a restaurant and shop with a long tradition within Acadia National Park, sits on a hill overlooking a beautiful lawn along the Jordan Pond. Guests have been enjoying these amazing views and dining at this site since 1893 when Nellie McIntire, the first proprietor, started baking and serving her famous popovers out of the restaurant. A visit to Adamson House and Malibu Lagoon Museum opens the door to layer upon layer of intriguing Malibu history. The enchanted site, where Malibu Creek meets the Pacific Ocean, was once home to the Chumash Indians, who thrived there until the late 18th century.

Jordan Pond House

Later, the Rindge family owned 17,000 acres and 20 miles of coastline. The Rindge family’s daughter, Rhoda, and her husband, Merritt Huntley Adamson, used the site to construct a beach house, now the historic Adamson House museum. Jordan Pond is located right next to the western side of the Park Loop Road which happens to be open to two way traffic in this area. There are several ways to get here depending on where you will be coming from on Mount Desert Island.

We highly recommend taking time to relax with a popover and soak in the view of Jordan Pond. This was one of our favorite things to do in Acadia National Park. The current restaurant and gift shop building was built in 1981. Popovers and tea have been served at Jordan Pond House since 1895 when Nellie McIntire started baking them in this spot. The original farmhouse was built by the Jordan family of Seal Harbor.

A path leads down to the water from the restaurant and joins with a hiking trail that goes to the left and to the right. Going right will take you to the North parking lot and further around the East side of Jordan Pond. If you go left at the bottom of the hill, you have an option to walk on the Carriage Road or walk on the walking trail close to the western edge of the shore. The National Park Service has done a great job recently constructing a boardwalk along this trail in sections.

Park Highlights

Built in 1929, it occupies one of the most idyllic oceanfront spots in all of Southern California. Equally compelling is the story of the close-knit family who once lived here and whose aura continues to permeate the interior, where most of their original furnishings remain. Near the end of this reign, John D. Rockefeller Jr. purchased the property and donated it to the National Park Service to ensure its continued existence.

The forty-five miles of scenic carriage roads throughout Acadia were built between 1913 and 1940 by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. He built the roads as a car-free, scenic means for himself and his neighbors to travel through and view beautiful Mount Desert Island. He began building even as plans were underway for much of the land to become a National Monument with the intent that the roads become a part of the preserved land. Rockefeller took his time about the creation of these horse roads.

It takes some planning to maximize the amount of images that I can capture before the quality of light changes. If I have begun my shooting on the East coast, I know that I still have some time to get to Jordan Pond because of the mountains between the East coast and Jordan Pond that creates a shadow. It adds to the time before the sunlight bursts above the treetops.

jordan pond house

If my primary goal is to shoot Jordan Pond, I usually want the surface of the pond to be as calm as possible and this often takes place very early as there is usually a calm before the sunrise. For a while, the height of the mountains gives some added wind protection but it soon disappears as the sun rises. Depending on what you want to begin taking photos of will require the basic choice of where to park. Choose the North Parking area if you want to get to the Pond in the shortest amount of time, or are carrying a lot of heavy gear.

The first settlers conducted a logging operation, establishing a small mill near the foot of the pond. The original farm house was built by the Jordan family of Seal Harbor, for whom the pond and house were named. With all the accoutrements of a well-stocked antique shop, the “cowgirl bathroom” encourages guests to linger, especially over the framed portraits of the 19th century couple who built the house. Elsewhere, bent-willow chairs bump against natural wood wainscoting, and a 1930s school desk sits beneath weathered oars, creels and duck decoys decorating the walls. The Spanish Colonial Revival style home—today a National Historic Site, California Historical Landmark, and a California State Park—casts a magical spell, allowing visitors to evoke old California in a way few places can.

Now serving a wide array of dishes and meals, from fresh lobster to popover ice cream sundaes, this combination of both culinary and scenic delights is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It is situated at the southwestern corner of the Park Loop Road, overlooking Jordan Pond from its southern shore. Two rôche moutonnées, known as "The Bubbles", provide the backdrop to the view from the house's lawn at the rear of the 60-acre property. This will save you a lot of stress in finding a parking space. To provide for the inspiration and education of our visitors through interpretive activities and to assist in the preservation of the historic Adamson House.

He cared more for the overall appearance and quality of the project than for its prompt completion. Parking can be found in the north lower lot of the Jordan Pond area. Some paths are accessible and offer beautiful views of the pond and connections to the carriage roads.

What it's really like to sail with Virgin Voyages

virgin voyages cruise line

We think who would love the cruise line the most would be a couple from years old celebrating an anniversary, special occasion, or simply wanting a romantic trip away. That, however, also casts too narrow a net as we saw all sorts having a great time. We will also say that compared to other mass market lines with mega ships, there aren’t near as many things to do as you see elsewhere. For instance, there’s no roller coaster, go-kart track, zipline, rock-climbing wall or the like. That’s by design as these are largely included to appeal to kids and teens on the ship.

Brilliant Caribbean holidays

As part of the partnership, fleetwide was introduced "JLo Beauty" (onboard shop) selling the superstar's products at sea for the first time. In June 2023, she was appointed as Virgin's Chief Celebrations Officer. In February, Virgin replaced Harding UK (Bristol-based global travel retail business) with Starboard Cruise Services (Doral Florida-based company).

Resilient Lady's Australia-Europe repositioning itinerary (via Suez Canal) changed to an Around...

The addition of a second ship in the Mediterranean for the summer season has allowed Virgin Voyages to offer seven-night voyages every week during the season out of both Barcelona and Piraeus, Greece (the port for Athens) — a first for the line. Additionally, we didn't have to worry about extra tips, taxes or fees. Tips for the crew, spa services and more are factored into your cruise price, so what you see on the menu really is what you can expect to pay. All the scheduled between March 26-August 7th (a total of 29) departures were canceled.

RockStar Quarters

Virgin cruise bookings on Scarlet Lady were opened on February 5, 2019 (for customers with pre-sale deposits) and on February 14 (for the general public). Beginning February 5, 2019, at FirstMates.com (dedicated website), the cruise company offers all booking tools and information for travel agents (called "First Mates"), including downloadable and digital materials, interactive learning and more. For February 6th was planned the learning campaign "Cabin Fever" on Scarlet Lady staterooms as they went on sale. The website allows travel agents to make bookings on inaugural cruise season 2020 deals (from February 14) and to contact company's Sailor Services (from February 5) in case they have customers with pre-sale deposits. Virgin cruise passengers are offered complimentary water (filtered and sparkling) at all onboard bars and restaurants. Enjoy a taste of luxury at the 20 onboard eateries, covering everything from Michelin-style dining to late-night snacking.

A Younger Crowd Embraces Cruising

Up until recently, I'd only ever sailed with Disney Cruise Line — and with my kids in tow. However, the Virgin Voyages concept has intrigued me since it launched. Scarlet Lady in summer 2024 is deployed in the Mediterranean and has scheduled two repositioning voyages - from Barcelona to Civitavecchia-Rome, and a Transatlantic crossing to Miami for a new Caribbean deployement. Next image shows one of the initial (train-like) Virgin ship designs. The first ship's (Scarlet Lady) keel-laying ceremony was held on October 31, 2017, and attended by Sir Richard Branson, Tom McAlpin, and Boy George (UK singer, songwriter, fashion designer) who performed as superstar DJ.

As of 2023, Starboard was contracted by 11 cruise lines and operated on 90+ ships worldwide. The onboard programming features live performances (by the company's Hapenings Cast) and is managed by Richard Kilman (Virgin's VP of Entertainment). Tom McAlpin commented that the company is not to be considered a big player in the cruising industry, but rather "a small boutique line that will offer different experiences".

Another top destination for Virgin Voyages is the Mediterranean, where the line has been expanding quickly as it adds new ships. The other two longer Caribbean itineraries that Virgin is offering in 2024 are both out of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and operated only by Valiant Lady. Some then add a Caribbean stop, while others add a stop in Florida.

Ports within British Isles

The club offers a couple of large pools, ample lounge chairs and towels, plenty of bars and a picture-perfect beach. While I appreciated the array of options at our disposal, I found the quality of the food and service to be hit or miss. Some restaurants I loved so much that I went back a second time; at others, I took a solitary bite of food before deciding to move on. Given all the options available, there were more places than we could try on our first Virgin Voyages cruise. Still, we sought to sample as much as possible during our four-night sailing.

Beyond the evening entertainment, the vibe was similar to what you'd find in Las Vegas. The pools, restaurants, spa, casino and exercise classes all featured plenty of skimpy outfits and adult-oriented jokes and innuendos, though you could avoid anything that was too outside your comfort zone. The entertainment we experienced fell somewhere between PG-13 and R, though we admittedly headed to bed by 11 p.m., so perhaps offerings leaned more X-rated as the night went on. While there is a "Scarlet Night" celebration featuring lots of red lights and sailors donning their best scarlet-colored attire, the atmosphere on board is far from what you'll find in Amsterdam's Red Light District. On November 28, 2018, Richard Branson and Tom McAlpin announced in Miami the company's plans to build a new (Virgin-exclusive) cruise terminal in PortMiami.

The announcement mentioned new cabaret and game shows, new parties (80s Party, We Fancy), and more live music (by the hosted in The Red Room and The Manor program Festival Stage Acts/comedy shows rotating every 2 to 4 weeks). The Internet is provided via MEO and LEO satellites (Medium Earth Orbit and Low Earth Orbit). Shipboard Wi-Fi access is unlimited and for multiple devices per guest. Set sail from Singapore on 11 April 2024 on a one-way voyage to Dubai with Virgin Voyages. With this 14-night voyage, you’ll have plenty of time to dip into Phuket’s beautiful green waters, gaze at Colombo’s incredible architecture, and catch up on Goa’s laid-back lifestyle.

virgin voyages cruise line

But, in a twist from most other cruise lines, they are also encouraged to be themselves, allowed to engage in more friendly and casual interactions with guests. If that conversation includes colorful language, it’s not a fireable offense. Virgin has eschewed traditional cruising concepts like a sprawling buffet or grand main dining room. In their place, Virgin’s “sailors” can find the mostly plant-based Razzle Dazzle restaurant, elevated Mexican at Pink Agave, steak and seafood at Wake, or grab-and-go at the Galley food market, just to name a few. For 2024, Scarlet Lady will be based in Barcelona (taking the place of Valiant Lady), offering two western Mediterranean itineraries that mostly focus on stops in Spain and France. Virgin also operates one-off sailings out of Miami around the winter holidays.

While other ports of call vary based on the sailing, a constant for Scarlet Lady is a stop at its private beach club in the Bahamas. Your cruise price covers dining at all of these spots, plus the quick bite options on the ship. However, some restaurants offer buy-up options labeled as "treat yourself" dishes that cost extra.

Virgin's Bimini Beach Club overlooks the sea and features a large lagoon-style swimming pool. The "resort experience" also features morning open-air exercises (yoga and meditation), afternoon DJ poolside parties, night beach bonfires and live musical performances. In mid-November 2021 was announced an investment in Virgin Voyages by Patricof & Co (1969-founded by Alan Patricof, specializing in venture capital investments). The company is part of Apax Partners LLP (London UK-based equity firm) that also includes Multinational Management Group (1972-founded) and Saunders Karp & Megrue (1988-founded). In September, Nirmal Saverimuttu succeeded Michael McAlpin as the company's President and CEO.

Virgin has pushed the boundaries of onboard entertainment in keeping with the company’s efforts to transcend a traditional cruise experience. To start, there are no drink packages — and that was a big complaint I heard on the ship from folks who were used to sailing with other lines that offer unlimited drink inclusion options. Instead, Virgin Voyages offers a bar tab that you can load before you sail. Sometimes bar tab credit is also included with the sailing as part of a promotion.

Nautical-inspired fashion is considered to be classy and high-end, thanks undoubtedly to its association with exclusive yacht clubs and luxurious boat purchases. You don’t need to be steering your own vessel to dress like you own the place, though — we’ll leave that job to the cruise captain. Even with your passenger status, you can make waves (forgive us for the very intended pun) by pulling on a pair of boat shoes and bermuda shorts. The more your color palette can be inspired by the ocean, the better — think navy blue, bright blue, gray, and white. Not to be confused with their distant cousin, the khak panti, chino offers a comfy pant without the visible stitches, which gives it a more formal look than its counterpart. With their lightweight fabric and breezy form, we would be remiss to make a list about outfits that are best worn in the sunshine without mentioning the chico.

However, the value of a used cruise ship can vary depending on factors such as its age, condition, and amenities. Now, let’s explore safety measures and barriers to prevent jumping incidents. In this article, I will delve into the historical incidents, the factors contributing to these events, the statistics, and the psychological factors behind such desperate acts. With a decade of firsthand experience in the cruising industry, I have developed a deep understanding of the intricacies and wonders that these majestic vessels hold. This awesome cruise shirt is so special for someone who will celebrate their birthday onboard. It took me almost an hour to pick out those five awesome cruise shirts and let me tell you, I came across a bunch of other cool stuff that caught my eye during the process. Look for shirts that allow you to add names, cruise dates, or specific designs to make your shirt unique. Customization options can enhance the sentimentality of your shirt as a keepsake from your cruise.

Update your settings

A Panama hat adds an element of holiday luxe no matter the time of day. In conclusion, when considering the duration of an Alaskan cruise, it is important to take into account the various options available. Whether you opt for a short, medium, or extended itinerary, each offers unique experiences and opportunities to explore the breathtaking beauty of Alaska. To determine the optimal cruise length, consider what you want to experience during your trip. If you’re looking to explore multiple ports and experience a wide range of activities, a longer cruise may be ideal. On the other hand, if you have limited time or prefer a more relaxed pace, a shorter cruise might be a better fit.

One major factor contributing to the high cost of these cruise ships is the extensive crew and staff required to ensure a seamless and personalized experience for each guest. From the attentive waitstaff to the skilled entertainers, the cost of hiring and training a highly qualified team adds to the overall expense of these luxury cruise ships. Factors such as mental health and personal circumstances can contribute to incidents of people jumping off cruise ships. It is crucial to raise mental health awareness and provide robust support systems for passengers to prevent such incidents. It is crucial to recognize the impact of these factors in order to develop effective prevention strategies and support systems onboard.

Don’ts:

For women who prefer to wear a shirt and pants or skirt rather than cocktail dresses, here are some shirts to consider for formal nights. Most of the popular cruise lines will have 1 or 2 formal nights during a 7 night cruise with the remaining nights more of a smart casual or resort casual. Here is another fun anniversary cruise shirt that can be personalized. I actually saw a couple wearing Somebody’s problem and Somebody t-shirts on my last cruise and had to find similar ones to add to this list. If you are a Morgan Wallan fan you will definitely appreciate these.

Passengers struggling with alcohol addiction or substance abuse may be more vulnerable to making impulsive decisions, including jumping off cruise ships. By understanding the statistics and the preventive measures being taken, we can gain a better understanding of the efforts being made to ensure passenger safety on cruise ships. If men can dress in color for their cruise vacation, why can’t women take part in the fun? We love the bohemian style for its creative use of color and adventurous patterns. There is something about the sunshine that makes us want to dress bold and bright, as if to match the mood.

When it comes to cruise duration planning, longer cruises have several benefits. They give you more time to fully immerse yourself in the stunning natural beauty of Alaska, allowing for a deeper connection with the wilderness. Longer cruises also provide the opportunity to visit more remote and less frequented ports, giving you a chance to discover hidden gems along the way. Additionally, extended cruises often offer more onboard amenities and activities, ensuring that you have plenty to do during your voyage. By opting for a longer cruise, you can truly make the most of your Alaskan adventure and create memories that will last a lifetime. Oh Ship Shirts presents family cruise shirts for your entire group.

Additionally, the role of cruise ship staff in preventing jumping incidents is crucial. Staff members should receive proper training to identify signs of distress and provide appropriate support and intervention. By creating a safe and supportive environment onboard, cruise ships can significantly reduce the occurrence of these incidents. These high-profile cases highlight the seriousness of the issue and the need to address the factors contributing to jumping incidents on cruise ships. This topic is likely to make you think twice before booking your next cruise vacation. Have you ever considered how many people intentionally jump off cruise ships?

The passengers getting on and off the ship are are smiling from ear-to-ear and smell like coconut butter. Sid, however, has a pout from shoulder to shoulder and smells like a Red Lobster, dumpster-fire. Maybe your travel partner is a little anal-retentive about the planning portion of the cruise, and meticulous about schedules for shore excursions.

If you play it correctly, you can pack your favorite button-down shirts in your luggage without having to worry about a mismatch of outfit tones. A breezy button-top actually pairs rather nicely with a pair of cotton shorts, particularly when you’re pairing a solid color shirt with patterned shorts or vice versa. Luckily, most cruise ships have irons on board, so no need to pack yours. Most cruise ship shirts are available in a range of sizes, including unisex, men’s, women’s, and children’s sizes. Review sizing charts provided by the retailer to find the best fit for you or your family members. Spread some holiday cheer on your cruise with our ‘Merry Cruisemas’ tee.

This fun cruise shirt is available in men’s women’s and kid’s sizes. You can get this shirt in different colors, or buy matching cruise shirts for every member of the family. Different demographics have different preferences when it comes to cruise experiences, such as family-friendly activities or adults-only amenities. To meet these preferences, cruise lines may offer different pricing tiers based on the target market.

Your choice of cruise ship shirt may depend on the destination of your cruise. If you’re headed to a tropical paradise, opt for lightweight and breathable fabrics like cotton or linen to keep cool in warm climates. Make your family cruise even more memorable with these customizable ‘Most Likely To’ shirts. Personalize them with fun and unique titles for each family member, and let the laughter and bonding begin. These shirts are the perfect way to celebrate your family cruise and create lasting memories together.

How Is August for an Alaskan Cruise?

alaska cruise august

Alaskans are inviting people who love to share what makes their state unique. Watch lumberjacks in action, learn from Glacier Bay National Park rangers and craft with a Native totem pole carver. Or listen to harrowing Tales from the Deadliest Catch fishermen and climbers who have summited Denali during your Alaska cruise. They groan, creak and shudder on their march to the sea, punctuated by the booms and crashes of "white thunder" — a sound that echoes across the water when ice calves into the ocean below. On an Alaska cruise, let us show you Glacier Bay National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier, College Fjord or Hubbard Glacier. The largest tidewater glacier in North America, Hubbard Glacier has been moving its mass towards the ocean at a rate faster than most of its kind.

SIX MILLION ACRES OF DISCOVERY

To help you find the best time to cruise to Alaska, Cruise Critic is breaking down the Alaska cruise season month by month to help you plan your bucket-list trip. Read on for average Alaska cruise prices, things to do in Alaska and everything else you'll need to decide which is the best month to cruise Alaska for you. Alaska has been a popular cruise destination for decades, and the industry has continued a trajectory of growth. Each summer season there seems to be another cruise line sailing Alaskan waters, while the longtime incumbents are relentless in their addition of new itineraries, amenities, and excursions. Modern Alaskan history has deep ties with the American pioneer spirit of the 19th and 20th centuries. On an Alaska cruise in August you can learn about the gold rush in Skagway, admire historic buildings in Sitka, see colorful houses in Ketchikan, and learn about Tlingit heritage in Icy Strait Point.

These months are also your best bet if you want active fishing trips on a shore excursion. From Juneau, you can take an excursion to Mendenhall Glacier, where you can see fantastic views of the ice on a hike or join a kayak tour. From Seward, you could join a challenging hike to Exit Glacier, which flows slowly from the enormous Harding Icefield. Wherever you go in Alaska, you’ll see glaciers in the distance, high in the mountains, sometimes hanging dramatically over a wall of rock.

Explore the Great Land

Other Alaska cruise highlights include Juneau; remote Ketchikan, and historic Skagway. Sail one-way between Vancouver and Seward or Vancouver and Seattle, round-trip from Vancouver or Seattle, or on a Cruisetour between Vancouver and Anchorage or Fairbanks. Our Alaska cruise departure ports have big personalities and loads of attractions.

Many cruise lines also have limited early cruise ships departing for Alaska in April. Norwegian Cruise Lines has the first departures of the season in early April from Seattle. Don’t just see the Great Land’s glaciers, feel them come alive on an Alaska cruisetour.

From top-rated cruises that visit Glacier Bay National Park to scenic rail travel and exclusive Princess lodges, you will find a seamless Alaska experience with Princess. On a cruise to Alaska, live a nature lover's dream in the land where guests can catch postcard-worthy sights. Once the gateway to Alaska's Gold Rush, Skagway strikes a dramatic image nestled between the water's edge and mountains. Follow in the footsteps of miners with a ride on a scenic train along the famous White Pass route through coastal mountains. During your Alaska cruise, explore the Yukon's pristine wilderness, pan for gold with professionals or meet sled dog puppies in training. Known for its timber, Ketchikan hosts the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, where athletes throw, race and chop their way to victory.

If you're intent on a Gulf of Alaska cruise, book a northbound route so you'll cruise the Gulf at the end of the trip when you have your sea legs. If you get seasick easily, also think twice about round-trip cruises from Seattle that spend days cruising in the open ocean. Popular destinations include Denali National Park (for wildlife viewing) or Talkeetna (best place for Denali views and cool eats). Cruise tour land packages are also available to spots like Anchorage, the Kenai Peninsula and Canada's Yukon Territory.

An Alaska cruise from Seattle will visit the Inside Passage but tends to favor the open (and frequently bumpier) Pacific Ocean. Sailings from Vancouver tend to traverse more of the Inside Passage and spend a full day sailing this scenic region. Embarking and disembarking in Seattle or Vancouver can make air travel easier and cheaper than one-way Alaska cruises, which require flights to smaller, more expensive airports in Alaska. You'll need to set aside a good chunk of money to spend on shore excursions when you're in Alaska. They can be incredibly expensive when compared to experiences in the Caribbean or Mexico. The cost of an Alaskan cruise, of course, rises during high season and will be less expensive before and after those months during shoulder season.

However, a cruise this time of year will also slightly decrease your chance of viewing wildlife and make for sleepier ports of call because most summer workers return home for college. Locals typically call the months of April and May “break-up” because the snow and ice begin to break apart and melt after the long winter. In April, mountains will still be snowy, and high temperatures will max out in the upper 40s for most cruise ports. Only an hour and a half from the cruise port of Whittier lies the largest city in Alaska – Anchorage. Visit the Chugach National Forest, the second largest national forest in the United States. Or visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and see brown bears, moose and bison living in a protected habitat that perfectly emulates the wild.

One overhaul to Disney Magic not too long ago brought such cutting-edge features as the AquaDunk — a 37-foot-tall body slide that careens over the side of the vessel — and a new outdoor kiddie fun zone called AquaLab. We have the answers so your first  time will be nothing but smooth sailing. Remove the hassle from air travel and give yourself the gift of flexibility, time and a thicker wallet with Princess EZair flights.

For the most part, the top decks of Regal Princess only offer pools, whirlpools and sunning areas, as is typical for Princess ships. As a result, it draws far fewer families than the vessels above and caters more to an older crowd of mostly couples. Notably, the 3,600-passenger Regal Princess lacks nearly all the gee-whiz attractions for families found on the other ships that sail out of Galveston. You won't find big waterslides, kiddie splash zones, zip lines or go-kart tracks on this ship.

Learn About Credit Cards

As is the case with all Princess ships, it's more of a ship geared toward middle-aged and older travelers without kids, including lots of retirees. Based in Galveston year-round, the 11-year-old vessel operates short four- and five-night voyages to the Western Caribbean that are often on sale for under $500 per person or less. For off-peak travel, we sometimes see five-night sailings for sale for around $300 per person — or just $60 a night. This is a third of the cost of similar five-night sailings on Disney Magic.

Carnival Breeze also offers a water park with waterslides on its top decks, a miniature golf course, a sports court for basketball and volleyball, and multiple pools. One of three ships in the line's Dream class that date to the late 2000s and early 2010s, the 3,690-passenger Carnival Breeze is no longer the newest or snazziest ship in the Carnival fleet. At around 130,000 tons, it's about 29% smaller than Carnival's newer Excel-class ships and has fewer venues, from bars and restaurants to entertainment spaces.

Based seasonally in Galveston from December to April, Disney Magic offers the best cruises out of Galveston for the Disney fan. It is, for the record, the only Disney Cruise Line ship that sails from Galveston. If either of those two attractions is a must-have for your next cruise out of Galveston, you'll want to book the Harmony of the Seas sailings that start in November.

MedallionClass® On All Ships!

But it still feels modern, thanks to major makeovers in recent years. Allure of the Seas sails out of Galveston every Sunday on seven-night voyages to the Western Caribbean. The ship stops at Roatan, Honduras; and Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico.

Galveston’s long seawall stretches from beach to beach and offers gulf views the whole way. Sprinkle in a few museums, amusement parks, attractive beaches and tasty seafood restaurants, and you’ve got a great start to your cruise from Galveston. Regal Princess is based in Galveston on a seasonal basis from November to March.

Fares for off-peak sailings on Disney Magic often start around $800 per person for a four-night trip — significantly higher on a per-night basis than the lowest-cost sailings on many of the other ships sailing out of Galveston. Like all Disney ships, Disney Magic boasts many cabins with split bathrooms — a boon for families. That's not something you'll find on any of the other Galveston-based cruise vessels.
